Mortar Explained
Mortar is a long-range defense capable of making splash-damage on ground troops.
Its attack consists of blasting an explosive shell far away, causing splash-damage upon impact.
The impact is so strong that knocks back small troops, making them stop the attack for a short period. This might also make them target another building.
With a 5 seconds fire rate, this is a very slow defense and you can easily predict when the next shot is coming when deploying troops.
This is a powerful defense on lower levels, but as you upgrade your Town Hall to level 10 and higher, better defenses are unlocked and the Mortar slowly loses importance.
This defense is often compared to Wizard Towers because of the splash-damage. However, the Mortars makes less damage, targets only ground troops, have a larger radius with a dead-zone around.
Range and Dead-Zone
This defense has a range of 4-11. It can reach enemy troops up to 11 tiles away but has a dead-zone of 4 tiles around.
Once a troop gets inside the dead-zone, the Mortar can longer aim at them.
Gear Up: Burst Mode

The Mortar is one of the three defenses that can be "geared up", among with the Archer Tower and Cannon. Gear Up Defenses adds an extra configuration option to the defense.
Unlocked from level 8, you must have a Multi Mortar level 8 on your Builder Base. This upgrade adds the option to shoot bursts of three explosive shells. The range remains the same and the overall damage is slightly increased.
It is currently possible to "Gear Up" only one Mortar.
Upgrading Mortars
Upgrading the Mortar improves its damage and hit points.
Tips & Tricks
When using Wall Breakers, always check for the Mortar. A single shot will always kill all Wall Breakers; however, with a fire rate of 5 seconds, you can easily predict when the next shot is coming and deploy the Wall Breakers at the right time.
On lower levels (up to Town Hall 10), always place Mortars inside your village. This placement can prevent the enemy from getting inside its dead-zone too soon on the attack.
It is extremely effective against Archers and Barbarians, making it one of the best defenses until you unlock the X-Bow and Inferno Tower on higher Town Hall levels.
A good tactic against Mortars and Wizard Towers is to create distractions with stronger troops. These defenses are only powerful against large quantity weak units, so it's a good idea to lure these defenses with Giants, P.E.K.K.As and Golems.
The Mortars can always kill Archers of the same level with a single shot.
When attacking make sure you don't group all units too close together. This makes them more vulnerable to Mortars and Wizard Towers.
